Connecting Educators, Technology Engineers and Entrepreneurs: International Partnership with Oulu EduLAB in Finland

UVM Signs Partnership Agreement with Oulu Universithy in Finland
UVM's College of Education and Social Services (CESS) and Oulu EduLAB in Finland recently signed a partnership agreement designed to create a new international exchange program for students and faculty. 
Oulu EduLAB is a university-based, full-semester pre-incubator and incubator program for interdisciplinary teams supporting the creation of prototypes, products and start-ups targeting the education technology industry.

Developmental Disabilities Leaders Join National Community of Practice (CoP) on Cultural and Linguistic Competence

This CoP provides Vermont, Washington D.C., California, New York, Michigan, Utah, Arizona, Colorado and Indiana with five years of technical assistance that will increase the number, diversity, and capacity of formal and informal leaders to transform their state/territorial developmental disabilities systems.

Mobility for Miley: CDCI Partners with School Robotics Project to Help 4-Year Move Independently 

Research indicates that finding methods for independent mobility at young ages is linked to children with disabilities experiencing success with other skills like language, socialization, and other motor functions.
The feel-good story about Miley was featured on the America Strong segment on ABC's World News Tonight. 

Research Team Studies Mindfulness Practice in High Poverty School

A research team from UVM's College of Education and Social Services published a unique study in Learning Landscapes Journal, describing a community-driven, schoolwide implementation of mindfulness as a central, unifying practice. The study provides guidance for school administrators and educators hoping to increase student well-being through improved social emotional learning, engagement in learning, and school climate.

Representing the Rights of Refugees: Madina Haji ('18)

Madina Haji spent the first nine years of her life in a Kenyan refugee camp. Now the UVM middle level education major is building a reputation as a strong advocate for refugees. “I love going out into the community and talking to people about civil rights," she says.

Garvey Publishes New Study on Campus Climate for LGBTQ Students

A recently published article in the Journal of College Student Development shows generational progress and improved perceptions of campus climate for LGBTQ undergraduates over 70 years. But that trend may be reversing, says study author Dr. Jason Garvey, an assistant professor in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration program at UVM.  

Garnett: The Damaging Effects of Polyvictimization on School Climate

Dr. Bernice Garnett's new study, published in the Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma, measures the impact of exposure to multiple forms of victimization on school climate at the middle and high school levels. “For each form of victimization, school climate measures go down precipitously," says Garnett, an associate professor in the College of Education and Social Services at UVM.

UVM Education Professor Receives Fulbright to Research Refugee Integration into School Communities

Dr. Barri Tinkler will serve as the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health at the University of Calgary, studying community-based efforts to support refugee integration. The goal of this research is to design a model for teacher educators in the U.S. to prepare preservice teachers for increasingly diverse settings.

UVM Alumna Kate McCann, 2017 Vermont Teacher of the Year

Vermont Teacher of the Year Kate McCann is dedicated to pushing herself to continually learn and improve as a teacher. “I’m always looking for the next thing,” she says.
McCann credits Lia Cravedi, her mentor in the College of Education and Social Services, for inspiring her to pursue teaching licensure through the Secondary Education master's program at UVM. 
Education for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity at UVM
UVM recently opened up a new university-wide Education for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (ECLD) minor allowing students to improve their cultural competence and skills to work successfully with diverse populations. Participating students gain experience in the field with multicultural communities while participating in a variety of interdisciplinary course work.

Campus Children's School Welcomes Barbara Burrington as New Leader 

"We intend to widen the lens to consider the experiences and contexts of children from a variety of of linguistic, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds," says Burrington, "so students are ready to enter the field as teachers, anywhere, bringing effective practices to scale and becoming leaders in the field.”
