Advancing Equity in Education

Internationally recognized author, teacher, and speaker Dr. Kimberly Vannest is excited about UVM's unique opportunities for partnership across departments, agencies, and schools. “My professional goals focus on contributions to the improvement of society through science and synergistic collaborations."

Improving STEM Education

“Involving students in real research results in increased engagement, learning and excitement,” says Regina Toolin. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Dr. TooIin and her UVM colleagues lead innovative programs that provide authentic place-based and project-based learning and research skills for secondary educators. 

Developing Citizens Through Equitable Education

“The program is so focused on equitable teaching, individualized learning, and social-emotional learning,” says middle level education senior Camilla Thomassen-Tai.
“We’re preparing students to be proficient citizens, not just to ace tests.”

Elevating Student Voice in School Reform Efforts

An article published in the International Journal of Student Voice describes a unique service-learning course co-designed and implemented by Dr. Colby Kervick and Dr. Lance Smith
"The article explains how universities can engage in service-learning opportunities for students utilizing Youth Participatory Action Research in tandem with Restorative Practices to elevate student voice," says Kervick.

Island Innovation Inspires Fulbright Scholar

Dr. Shana Haines is an expert on cultural and linguistic minority populations, inclusive practices and family, school and community partnerships.
Her Fulbright project in the Azores will examine innovative collaborations that strengthen family, school and community relationships, along with Azorean approaches to special education. 

Okech Receives National Recognition for Counselor Education Book

Honoring her consequential impact in the field of counselor education, the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (ACES) recognized Dr. Jane Okech with their Publication of the Year Award (2019) for her co-authored book, Counselor Education in the 21st Century: Issues and Experiences.

Student Engagement in Many Forms and Places

As a person with diverse interests and talents, Ben Schnier has tremendous energy and passion for human development and social justice issues. 
The Human Development and Family Studies senior is building a diverse resume of experiences locally, nationally, and globally.

Guiding the Healing Process

"I really believe in helping people to help themselves and take the lead in their life," says Psychotherapist Nydia Guity (Social Work '09).
"Validation of a client’s experience is powerful in the therapeutic process. I think it’s also important to be mindful of systemic issues that impact individual stressors." 

Designing My Education at UVM

"In addition to focusing on policy, it was important that my work had an explicit focus on social justice," explains Individually Designed Major Emma Staff ('21).
"I always want to be thinking about and analyzing various solutions to some of the largest problems we face as a society."

Cravedi Honored with Outstanding Faculty Advising Award

Lia Cravedi sees her student advisees as people with unique needs, goals, and aspirations.
“She has long had a reputation for offering excellent, individualized advice to her advisees and providing them with strong support when they need it," said UVM Interim Provost Patty Prelock.

Social Change and the Power of Human Connection

Celia Cuddy is known for her transformational impact on UVM Social Work students and alumni.
"I love that social work is explicit about our professional commitments to working for social justice. This shapes our practice at all levels," says Cuddy.

Tarrant Institute Publishes New Book

A new book co-authored by Dr. Penny Bishop, Dr. John Downes and Dr. Katy Farber examines deeper learning, personalized learning policy, and postsecondary access and success.
“This book truly could not exist without the kindness and collaboration put forth by our Vermont teachers," says Farber.
