Teachers Inspire: Stories about Teachers Who Change Lives

"Mr. Weyne saw me. I wasn't invisible or overlooked," says Beverly Colston, director of UVM's Mosaic Center for Students of Color, when thinking about the teacher who continues to inspire her work.
We are proud to share Beverly's story (video) and other videos about the enduring impact of teachers on people all around us.

Comerford Receives Top Service Learning Award

Dr. Suzy Comerford, associate professor of social work, is the 2018 recipient of UVM's top award for community-engaged teaching/service-learning. “Suzy's ability to weave the complexities of the journey of a refugee was so deliberate and insightful,” says social work student Hillary Gombar (’18). "I am so honored to learn from her, and with her.”

Reyes and Haines on Refugee Acculturation in School Communities

Dr. Cynthia Reyes, associate professor of education, works with new American students in public schools, many of whom lived in refugee camps. Reyes has seen that the power of technology and digital storytelling is a bridge builder that helps bring people from different backgrounds together. "What I loved about the project was the joy that the students really had in creating their own story," she says.
Dr. Shana Haines, assistant professor of special education, explains how her experiences compelled her research, which focuses on the relationship between refugee families and their children’s teachers in American schools. "What’s at the root of a good school is trust and having strong relationships," says Haines, "and people working together toward common goals."

Garnett Honored as Burack Green and Gold Professor of Education

Dr. Bernice Garnett's work addresses bullying, harassment, and school climate through restorative practices, utilizing a variety of research methodologies, including mixed methods, community-based participatory research, and youth participatory action research. She also explores transdisciplinary school and community-based approaches to promote health and wellness in underserved communities. See Bernice's story >>

Eliminating Structural Barriers to Student Success

“I’ve always been interested in how structural inequalities shape life outcomes, especially for low-income people,” says Tracy Arámbula Ballysingh, assistant professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs. She now dedicates her academic life to uplifting first-generation students from low-income families who are trying to overcome society’s structural inequalities.

Faculty Receive Grant for Action Research on Restorative Practices

Our multi-disciplinary research team of Dr. Lance Smith, Dr. Tracy Ballysingh, Dr. Bernice Garnett and Dr. Colby Kervick received a REACH Grant for their community action research project on restorative practices in schools. Their project is nested within a larger multi-phase, multi-year, collaborative action research partnership with our Center on Disability and Community Inclusion (CDCI) and the Burlington School District (BSD). With expertise in school counseling, public health, K-12 education, and higher education, the research team seeks to understand and evaluate the process and outcomes of implementing restorative practices.

CESS Student and Alumni Stories

Commitment to student-centered learning and community engagement are hallmarks of our academic programs. CESS students and alumni have remarkable stories to share about their impactful work with service agencies, schools, families and communities locally and globally.
We are proud to share a few of these stories.

UVM Campus Children's School Celebrates 80th Anniversary

“The idea that classrooms are laboratories has always been paramount to the mission of the school,” says interim school director Barbara Burrington. “Sara Holbrook wrote a letter to the dean emphasizing that direct observation of children is important to becoming a skilled teacher, and that thread has been consistent at the children's center and in our teacher education program throughout the 80 years.”

Center on Disability and Community Inclusion Launches New Web Site

Our Center on Disability and Community Inclusion (CDCI) is happy to announce the launch of its new website. CDCI helps people of all backgrounds and abilities through a variety of projects and services, and is part of a national network of University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs).

Social Justice Activist Richard Ross Visits UVM

Award-winning activist, artist, and photographer Richard Ross ('67) documents the juvenile justice system, putting a real face on youth with no voices and no family resources in communities without power and privilege. Ross visited UVM on April 2 to deliver his powerful presentation, "Art as a Weapon of Social Change." His work was on exhibit at UVM during the month of April.
