Welcome to the Spring 2019 edition of Engagement. We are pleased to share news about our ongoing efforts to promote a more humane and just society, free from oppression, that maximizes human potential and the quality of life for all individuals, families, and communities.

Cynthia Reyes Receives George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award

Dr. Reyes’s work with language, literacy, and its impact on identity is the focus of her research.
In collaboration with her colleagues and various stakeholders, she is particularly focused on relationships between English language learners and school communities.

Celebrating our Three Newest Fulbright Scholars

"I want to uplift, inspire, and support individuals and communities in need through an inclusive social work practice that centers on healing," says Briana Martin, who will pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work at McGill University in Montreal. Read Briana's story.

Giangreco Receives National Recognition for Special Education Research

To recognizes his body of work researching inclusive education, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) recognized Dr. Michael Giangreco with its Distinguished Researcher Award.
“Many of the values Professor Giangreco has been promoting are reflected in my daily work now," says Petra Rinelli, a special educator in Burlington.

Inaugural APEX Scholarships Awarded to Sam Whitman and Tonia Crawford

"These wonderful students really do represent who and what we're seeking to create," said Emeritus faculty member Charlie Rathbone. “We hope to continue building a loyal group of supporters to help increase the scholarship fund and help more students who believe in the values of the APEX program.”

Community Engagement through Art Education

"Our service-learning courses encourage meaningful work where art, community, and building strong relationships come together," says Erika White, 2019 Outstanding New Service-Learning Faculty Award recipient.
Community partners include the Fleming Museum, King Street Center, Sara Holbrook Community Center, Burlington City Arts, and Woodside Juvenile Rehabilitation Center. Read the full story >>

Sexual Rights and Accessible Curriculum in Social Work

Dr. Lacey Sloan was at the forefront of the rape crisis movement in the 1980s, and she successfully fought against the practice of polygraphing survivors of sexual assault. 
Before arriving at UVM in 2018, she developed social work programs around the globe. 

Making a Difference for Children and Families

"Making positive changes in my students' and families' lives makes me enjoy and feel proud of my work as a teacher." Originally from the Bronx, Rosalva Aguilar has enjoyed field experiences in a variety of community settings including the King Street Center, the Campus Children’s School, Trinity Children’s Center, and JFK Elementary School.

Reversing Inequity in Science Education

"We know our understanding of science is influenced by our prior experiences. In the U.S., those experiences are heavily impacted by race, producing drastically different science learning outcomes," says Associate Professor Leon Walls. He challenges students to think about the language and techniques they use to teach science, and how to relate all children in discussions.

Doctoral Scholarship Recipient Strives to Help Underrepresented Students Achieve Success

“Through my research interest and my career, I want to help students from refugee backgrounds achieve their academic goals,” says Ashraf Alamatouri. "When I worked with refugee populations...I learned from them more than they learned from me. I wanted to be their voice in higher education.”

Health, Wellbeing and Equitable Outcomes in Education

The goal of Dr. Haley Woodside-Jiron's research is to bring educators, families, healthcare and social service providers together, synergizing their efforts to help meet the needs of the whole child.
“I’m dedicated to making sure that our teacher education programs and our college take that approach," she says.

Meet the People in our Continuing Education Programs

"I wanted to understand what kids were learning or would need to learn to succeed in an increasingly digital age,” says UVM instructor Lucie deLaBruere, whose philosophy is to never stop learning.

Kolbe and Killeen Receive National Award for Policy Work

For their policy work on special education funding, Dr. Tammy Kolbe and Dr. Kieran Killeen received the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division L Outstanding Report in Education Policy.
Their policy report was the culmination of a three-year study to examine the State of Vermont's structure of special education funding and practice.
