Intramural Sports FAQ's

This page is designed to answer your common questions related to intramural sports participation. For all questions not listed below, please refer to our Intramural Sports Participant Handbook.

  • Intramural Sports are organized recreation sports for students (undergrad/grad/med), faculty and staff who are currently enrolled or work at the university. Intramural Sports consist of leagues, tournaments, contests and special event formats. If you have questions, reach out to imsports@uvm.edu

  •  The IM Sports program offers a wide range of sports and programs. We offer different sports each semester of the academic year. Our major leagues include: volleyball, basketball, flag football, softball, soccer and more. We offer a wide range of special tournaments and events too, including badminton, pool battleship, and many, many others!

For a full list of what we offer, or to sign up intramural sports, go to www.IMLeagues.com/UVM or download the IMLeagues app via the Apple or Google Play stores.

  • Price varies per sport, but are minimal and designed to be spread across your teammates. Our league sports run from $30-$50/per team. Individual/Dual Sports range from $10-$20/per team. Tournaments typically cost $10-$15/per team. Forfeit fees may be assessed if a team does not show up to play their games.

  • All participants need to create a free IMLeagues account. For more information on creating an account, registering a team, or joining a friends team, click this link on our page.

  • You can play on one gender specific team and one mixed gendered team for each sport. For example, you can play on a female soccer team and a mixed gender soccer team. But there is no limitation on how many sports you play in a semester. We encourage you to play as many as your time permits.

  • Some leagues may be divided into (sub-leagues) by level of competition. Competitive leagues typically feature players with advanced skillsets for that sport. Recreational leagues typically feature a mix of skill levels from players who have advanced knowledge of the sport, to players who may never have played that game. To preserve the integrity of these two sub-leagues, we do not allow players to play on more than one team within a league (ex. a player cannot play in men’s competitive and men’s recreational).

  • Each intramural participant on a winning team will win the coveted Championship T-shirt. A new t-shirt is designed each year!

  • You can sign up to be a free agent through IMLeagues. Captains looking to pick up extra players can browse IMLeagues under the free agents section. If there is enough interest, we sometimes create Free Agent teams for each sport.

  • Many sports have different roster limits depending on the players allowed on the court each time. Our general rule is we allow two times the amount of players it takes to field a whole team on the playing surface.

  • Most outdoor events will take place at Virtue or Centennial Field. Any indoor activity will take place in Patrick Gym, the MAC, Gutterson Ice Rink, or the indoor turf. Games are sometimes also played in the Fitness Center Indoor Track. All times and places will be posted online for the teams to see, be sure to read your game schedule carefully.

  • You can go to the IMLeagues webpage or app to view when your team plays, schedules, standings, etc. Make sure you create a free account with your @uvm.edu email.

  • Rules for each program can be found on the Intramural Sports Overview page, under Sport Policies and Rules, on the bottom right-hand side.

  • Your team must record one of the top records in their division and average a 4.0 sportsmanship rating during the season. We base our sportsmanship rating on a 5.0 scale. Teams will be emailed when the bracket is released regarding their seed and date/time for playoff matchups. More details on playoff qualification can be found in our Intramural Sports Participant Handbook

  • Club sports are registered student organizations that are managed by UVM Student Government Association. Some of these clubs compete on a regional and national level against other universities and colleges, while other clubs operate on a recreational level only. A full list of clubs and information can be found at www.uvm.edu/studentlife/clubsports

Intramural sports give students the opportunity to compete on-campus with other UVM students in different leagues including Men's, Women's, Mixed Gender, or Open.

  • Yes, and we encourage it! However, we do have a restriction on this for sports that compare or are “like” to a club sport, please view the Intramural Sports Participant Handbook for more detailed information and how many are allowed on your Intramural Sports roster.

  • Yes you can! We have a restriction on this, however. Varsity athletes may not play in their “like” sport while they are on the varsity team (ex. A current UVM basketball player may not play IM basketball). Also, if a varsity athlete wishes to play in their “like” sport, they must be removed for one full academic year starting from the end of their last varsity season. Teams are limited to one former varsity athlete per team in the “like” sport.

  • All of our intramural sports supervisors are certified through American Red Cross in First Aid/CPR/AED. They are first responders in all emergency situations and are trained to handle all situations that may occur regarding injuries. All participants must also sign a liability waiver before they play.

  • You can view our employment page for any openings. While positions may open as needed, our busiest application periods are before the start of Fall and Spring semester. Prior officiating experience helps but is not required. An enjoyment of recreation and willingness to learn also helps.
