As essential businesses, how are farms adapting to the evolving COVID-19 situation with no-contact direct sales, restaurant closures, and farmers markets in flux? Vermont is fortunate to have creative farmers leading the way, and a highly collaborative network of organizations supporting those farms and their communities.

In April and May 2020, UVM Extension personnel, in partnership with many farmers, agricultural service providers including colleagues from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets , NOFA-VT , Vermont Fresh Network , Vermont Farm to Plate , and community members, offered a series of interactive conversations in order to share strategies, challenges, and resources. Our purpose has been to help farmers make a quick adjustment to new realities of selling local food, while embracing the opportunities to have successful businesses and serve communities in new ways.

"Led by the Center for Sustainable Agriculture, several of us came together and developed an online conversation series that we titled “Sourcing and Selling Vermont Food in the Time of COVID-19.” We asked questions like: Should you keep your farmstand open? If you do, how do you do it safely? How can you still connect with people who can’t come visit your farm in meaningful ways? And we talked about equity and access in local food systems as well. The series attracted almost 600 farmers, agricultural service providers and community members."
