The nitty, gritty of participating in the Spring Move Out Project (SMOP)

It's almost time!

We will be holding two SMOPs this year at two different sites on two different days.

Lower Loomis Street:

May 09, 2024
11:00 to 2:00

Lower Buell Street

May 21, 2024
11:00 to 2:00

What to expect:

FREE to you:
- You can bring undamaged furniture and household items (think coffee maker or lamp) in good working order to the swap for FREE. Need something for your new rental try your luck by passing by to see what's available.
- Recycle your non-working electronics.
Stuff with a subsidized fee:
- Bring damaged furniture and other household goods to our onsite dumpster for a fee depending on size/weight (usually from $5 - $25)
- New this year, you can now recycle your unusable mattress for a small fee instead of sending it to the landfill! We have a new partner - Sleep Well Recycling
Stuff not to bring:
- NO HAZARDOUS WASTE
  - Check out CSWD instructions on getting rid of this through their locations.
- NO CONSTRUCTION WASTE

Tips for Making Moving Less Stressful

Trash, Mail, & Security Deposits

If you're planning on moving out of your off-campus rental, it's important to have a plan with your roommates and landlord. Below are a few tips and resources to make the process as smooth as possible:

When you move out, make sure to clean the place thoroughly. If you do not do this, your landlord may deduct money from your security deposit.
Remember that leaving furniture in the greenbelt is illegal and you could be fined up to $500 if you do so.
Contact all the utility companies to terminate your services.
Remove your name(s) from the mailbox, and have your mail held at the post office until they receive your new address.
Make arrangements to have your landlord do a walk-through before you move out. It is your right to be present at this inspection.
Talk with your landlord about how to return your keys.
Give the landlord your forwarding address so that your security deposit can be returned to you. For more information on getting your security deposit back, see pg. 6 of the Off-Campus Living Guide.

Year Around Help with Trash, Recycling, & Donating

These other resources are available year-around to help you deal with the things you no longer want.

Remember: it’s illegal to put electronics (including TVs, computers, tablets, cell phones, etc.), food scraps, or hazardous waste in the trash. The Chittenden Sold Waste District has all the info you need to trash items responsibly that aren't normal household trash (their Chuck It Guide is a great condensed version).
Item donations are accepted at ReSOURCE - one of our non-profit partners. If you schedule a few weeks out, they can also pick items up. Make sure you check out their donation guidelines before calling. For Burlington pick-ups, call (802) 857-4345
ReStore - Consider donating your furniture, household goods and building supplies to the Williston ReStore. Donations are accepted during business hours, or if you have large furniture, appliances or many items, call (802) 857-5296 to schedule a FREE pick-up.
For furniture and household items in good condition, you can also try posting on various Facebook groups like Burlington Gifting, and Buy Nothing Old North End (ONE), or check out Front Porch Forum. We love Front Porch Forum because it helps you get to know your neighbors - virtually at least. As always take precautions against scams when interacting with people you don't know online.
If you are not of age to rent a U-Haul, check out CarShare Vermont - as a student you get a discounted membership and they have a pick-up truck you can rent!
For books in good condition try donating to FREE Little Libraries in the area or Fletcher Free Library
For non-perishable food items try local FREE Little Pantries or Feeding Chittenden
For clothing try Ohavi Zedek's Shalom Shuk
