PROMOTIONS
Sunday's contest is High School Day as UVM Athletics is offering free tickets to any high school soccer team in attendance.
SETTING THE SCENE
After splitting the opening weekend with a win over Sacred Heart and falling at Rhode Island, the Green and Gold will square off with the Panthers for the first time ever. UVM is looking to start 2-0 at home for the second time in the last four years. The Catamounts enter the weekend tied for the league lead with four goals scored and have registered the most corner kicks (15) among their conference foes. In two games, Vermont's offensive production has come from all angles as four different players have recorded a point –
Sarah Martin,
Angie Salvi,
Brooke Jenkins, and
Savana Yurick.
Coco Speckmaier is tied for third among America East keepers with seven saves.
LAST TIME OUT
The Catamounts mounted a comeback by scoring twice in a two-minute span late in the second half, but could not get past Rhode Island last Sunday for a 4-2 defeat. After the Rams built a 3-0 in the final period, Jenkins tapped in a rebound in the 62nd minute and Yurick cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 64th minute with her first goal of the season. Speckmaier made four saves in the contest.
MARTIN FOR THE WIN
In the season opener versus Sacred Heart,
Sarah Martin scored Vermont's first penalty kick goal since 2012 which also proved to be the game-winner. The senior midfielder notched her sixth career game-winning score and moved her into a seventh-place tie on UVM's all-time list. She is also one of seven players in America East with a game-winning goal so far this season.
ROOKIE SUCCESS
Salvi broke a scoreless tie in the 48th minute against Sacred Heart for her first career goal. The freshman was the first UVM rookie to score a goal in her collegiate debut since teammate
Sarah Martin achieved the feat back in 2013.
SCOUTING FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
The Panthers come into the weekend with an 0-1 record after falling 2-0 to crosstown rival Miami last Sunday. FIU will play at Dartmouth on Friday night before traveling to Burlington on Sunday for a two-game series in the twin states. First-year head coach Sharolta Nonen has a large amount of youth on her squad with 21 underclassmen including eight freshmen. The Panthers return two of their top point scorers from a year ago in Jacky Manteas (1 goal, 2 assists) and Bria Williams (2 goals). Goalkeeper Nevena Stojakovic enters her senior season with 14 wins and owns a 1.20 goal-against average in her career. In the tough loss to the Hurricanes, Stojakovic stopped seven shots in all 90 minutes of action.
