Network compatibility for Media Streaming, Game Consoles, and Smart Devices

Unlike computers and smart phones – most game, media, and smart home devices are not designed to be used on WPA2-Enterprise networks, a common WiFi network standard used by UVM and most other universities. Such devices may not be able to connect to the UVM wireless network. Fortunately, many game and media devices are able to connect to the wired network using an Ethernet cable.

Devices that won’t work on UVM WiFi

Please look for your device below to see if a wired network connection is possible. For instructions connecting to the wired network, see Getting Connected at UVM.

NOTE: This list is not comprehensive and will change as new information becomes available.

Device Wired Compatibility
Amazon Echo/Dot/Spot/Show/Dash Button
Amazon Fire TV
Apple TV**
Chromecast/Ultra
Google Home/Mini/Max
Nintendo 2DS/3DS/etc. – any DS model
Ninetendo Wii U/Switch
PlayStation 3/4
PSP/PS Vita
Roku 2/3/Premiere+/4/Ultra – any Roku device with an Ethernet port
Roku Streaming Stick/Express/Premiere – any Roku device without an Ethernet port
Smart lights (e.g. Phillips Hue bulbs), smart doorbells, smart home bridges/hubs – smart home devices in general
Wireless printers
Xbox 360/One

** AirPlay with an Apple  TV will not work unless the connecting device is also connected to the wired network. Password protection is recommended as anyone in the same area of the wired network will be able to see the device.

Key
These devices DO have Ethernet ports, so they can be registered at go.uvm.edu/playonline and connected to UVM’s wired network using an Ethernet cable. For instructions and more info, see Getting Connected at UVM.
These devices do not have Ethernet ports but can be used with compatible Ethernet adapters, so they can be connected to UVM’s wired network using an Ethernet cable and a compatible adapter registered on our network. For instructions and more info, see Getting Connected at UVM.
These devices do not have an Ethernet port and/or are used in a way that would not work correctly on a network shared by large numbers of other users.

Not allowed on campus

The following devices are prohibited from use on campus according to UVM’s Computer, Communication, and Network Technology Acceptable Use Policy.

  • Routers
  • Network Switches
  • Any Surveillance devices
  • Apple Time Capsule

What if my device isn’t listed?

If your device is not listed above and you’re not sure it’ll work on the UVM wireless network, there are a couple things to look for:

  1. Check the manufacturer’s documentation to see if the device supports 802.1x authentication (WPA2-Enterprise), if it does it should be able to connect to UVM WiFi.
  2. If it supports WPA2-Enterprise but gives you a list of settings to fill out when trying to connect, check out this article for the correct settings.
  3. If it doesn’t support WPA2-Enterprise networks, look for an Ethernet port. If it has one you may be able to connect it to the wired network.
  4. If it doesn’t support WPA2-Enterprise networks AND doesn’t have an Ethernet port, check the manufacturer’s documentation to see if it supports Ethernet connections using an adapter.
